Península de Setúbal is a wine region in Portugal that has become a prime tourism destination in the last decades, mainly because of the protected National Parks of Arrábida and Marinho D.Luis Saldanha, the Natural Reserve of Sado Estuary, the Protected Landscape of Arriba Fóssil da Caparica and the excellent infrastructures and heritage buildings, also rich in diversity and historical importance.

The landscape, the culturally rich heritage and the world-famous wines are only three of the many reasons why Península de Setúbal should be on your plans when you are visiting Portugal.

The History of Wine Production in Península de Setúbal

Wine tourism in this region has become equally important. The vines and wines cultivated and produced in the region have always played a leading role in the history of Portuguese wines.

Producers in this region have prestigious wines and are winners of several international awards, but the recognition comes from old times, since during the Late Middle Ages, when wine has been a main export product in Peninsula de Setúbal.

In recent archaeological excavations in Península de Setúbal, grape seeds were found dating from the 8th century BC, highlighting the ancient culture of the vine, which goes back in the region to a period long before the formation of Portugal.

Half-day Wine Tour in The Península de Setúbal Region

As you can see wine history goes way back in time in the Península de Setúibal, making it a great destination for those who wish to learn more about the wines of Portugal but also to taste some of the best wines in the world.

If you are a true wine enthusiast and want to taste these famous wines right where they are produced with the vineyards in sight, we recommend you visit the beautiful and world-recognized wine estates just a few minutes from Lisbon.

In a half-day tour to Península de Setúbal you will get to know the two most important Estates in the Península de Setúbal region.

Visit the Garden, Museum and Winery of Quinta da Bacalhôa

If you are in Lisbon, you will pass through the Tagus River to get to the Península de Setúbal. Arriving there, the first Estate you will visit is the Quinta da Bacalhôa, where you will know more about its wine production process and end it with the final result – the wine tasting. The Bacalhôa brand has always been dedicated to reaching perfection in its wines. Their commitment is focused on product differentiation, as well as on a strong innovative component, in order to not only meet but also anticipate and even exceed the expectations of the visitors of its spaces. This differentiation is clearly noticeable in the famous Palace and Quinta da Bacalhôa, in Azeitão, a estate with a history that dates back to the beginning of the Avis Dynasty.

Next on your tour it's José Maria da Fonseca Wines. This Estate has an ancestral tradition that you will be aware of when you visit the Museum House. The tour begins in the Museum with a brief explanation about the history of the company. After a walk through the beautifully cared garden, you will visit the different Wine Cellars: The Mata Wine Cellar, where the Periquita wine stages, the Teares Novos Wine Cellar, where annually takes place the Fellowship of Periquita and the Teares Velhos Wine Cellar, where rest the house’s oldest Muscats. The tour ends with a more elaborate tasting of six wines, two Whites, two Reds and two Setubal Muscats.
