How many MICHELIN Key hotels are in Portugal? Portugal has 69 hotels with a MICHELIN Key in 2026, according to the selection announced on September 18, 2026. Two hold Three Keys, 14 hold Two Keys, and 53 hold One Key. Sixteen hotels are new this year, including Casa da Calçada in Amarante, which entered directly with Two Keys.

What Is a MICHELIN Key?

A MICHELIN Key is the hotel counterpart of the MICHELIN Star for restaurants. Anonymous inspectors stay at hotels and evaluate them on five points: how well the hotel connects guests to its destination, its interior design and architecture, the consistency of its service, comfort and upkeep, its value relative to the experience, and its character and authenticity.

Two Keys go to stays that stand out for charm, design and sense of place.

Hotels That Kept Their MICHELIN Keys

Fifty-three hotels return from last year's selection, and most of them are featured in our 2025 guide to Portugal's MICHELIN Key hotels. Both Three-Key resorts, Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa in Porches and Penha Longa Resort in Sintra, kept their top distinction. All 13 Two-Key hotels from that guide also kept their Keys, including Six Senses Douro Valley, Torre de Palma Wine Hotel, and Vinha Boutique Hotel, and so did every One-Key hotel it lists, including The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Sixteen hotels join this selection this year. Five are in the Algarve, six in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, two in the Douro Valley, two in Lisbon and one in Braga.

New MICHELIN Key Hotels for Wine Lovers

Several of the new entries sit in or beside wine country. Casa da Calçada in Amarante and Octant Douro in Castelo de Paiva put the Douro Valley on the list again, while Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia joins The Yeatman and Vinha Boutique Hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto's Port wine lodges.
