Nestled among more than 660,000 cork oaks and 65 hectares of vines in Vidigueira, southern Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has just raised the bar for wine tourism in Portugal. The estate — which celebrated 25 years in 2025 and recently joined the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) collection — has unveiled two stunning new Vineyard Villas, opening a new chapter in immersive, luxury wine travel in the Alentejo.
If you've ever dreamed of waking up to an endless sea of vines, taking a morning dip in your own heated pool, and finishing the day with a glass of award-winning Alentejo wine as the sun sets over the Guadiana River — read on.
What makes these villas truly special is their origin story. The structures that now house the Vineyard Villas were once working support buildings used during harvest season. Rather than build from scratch, the estate's owner, Sofia Ginestal Machado, chose to breathe new life into these historic structures — a philosophy that runs through everything at Herdade do Sobroso.

Designed by architect Maria Ginestal Machado, the villas were carefully rehabilitated to preserve the original character of the traditional monte alentejano — the low-lying whitewashed farmhouse style synonymous with the Alentejo landscape. The result is a rare combination: spaces that feel deeply rooted in their surroundings, while offering every modern comfort a discerning traveller could ask for.
Strategically positioned along the Ribeira do Sobroso, both villas offer absolute privacy, generous outdoor living spaces, and a genuine immersion into the vineyard landscape.
Vineyard Villa — 150 m²
A 150 m² retreat for up to four adults, the Vineyard Villa combines contemporary comfort with the timeless character of the Alentejo. Interiors feature traditional handcrafted décor — terracotta pieces, antique floor tiles, and local artisan accents — that create an atmosphere that is warm, personal, and unmistakably Portuguese.
Key features:
This villa is ideal for couples or small groups seeking seclusion surrounded by vines — with the added luxury of a sun-drenched terrace where the only distraction is the view.

Vineyard Villa with River View — 170 m²
For travellers who want it all, the Vineyard Villa with River View delivers 170 m² of refined space, combining vineyard panoramas with sweeping views over the Guadiana River — one of the longest rivers in the Iberian Peninsula.
Key features:
The estate's four kilometres of river frontage creates a setting unlike almost anywhere else in Portuguese wine country. The Guadiana River glimmers just beyond the vines, and the terrace faces west — meaning guests are perfectly positioned for some of the most spectacular sunsets in the Alentejo.

Staying at Herdade do Sobroso is about far more than beautiful accommodation. The estate has long been one of Portugal's most celebrated wine destinations — named by Forbes as one of the 50 best wineries in the world — and guests have access to a full programme of wine and nature experiences.
On-site experiences include:
The Nature Retreat is a perfect complement to the villas: after a day exploring the vines or tasting through the estate's wines, guests can unwind with treatments in a setting of near-absolute silence, surrounded by nature.
Herdade do Sobroso's induction into Small Luxury Hotels of the World in early 2026 is recognition of what wine lovers have known for years: this is one of Portugal's most complete and authentic wine tourism estates. The new Vineyard Villas — with their private pools, riverside position, and deeply Alentejano character — bring the property's offering in line with the very best boutique wine hotels in Europe.
