Yes. Even in December, a last-minute New Year's Eve in Portugal is possible, especially if you build it around wine country rather than a city-centre hotel. Porto, the Douro Valley and the wine regions around Lisbon still offer private tours, estate stays and New Year's Day tastings when the big hotels are full.

## Why Portugal is the smart last-minute choice

City hotels sell out first; wine estates and private experiences usually keep space longer. Madeira is the clearest example of the city squeeze: over New Year 2025/26, Funchal's hotel occupancy reached [nearly 100%](https://www.timesofmadeira.com/madeira-lights-up-the-sky-to-welcome-2026). ## How to book New Year's Eve in Portugal at the last minute
The order in which you book matters more than how early you book.
1. **Lock in the experience first.** Private tours and estate lunches have fixed capacity; your flight and city hotel are easier to adjust around them.
2. **Split the stay.** Spend 31 December in Porto or Lisbon, then move to a wine estate on 1 or 2 January, when demand drops.
3. **Travel on 30 December or 2 January.** Avoiding 31 December and 1 January usually makes flights and transfers easier.
4. **Skip the car.** Douro roads are steep and winding, and nobody wants to be the designated driver at a tasting. Many of our tours include a private driver.
5. **Pack for cool, changeable weather.** Expect cool nights and possible rain, especially in the north.
6. **Ask a specialist, not a search engine.** Last-minute availability at small, family-run quintas rarely appears on large booking platforms.
