Meet Alma: The New Yacht Sailing the Douro

The Douro Valley is where Portuguese wine tourism began. Carved by centuries of hand-built terraces climbing steep granite slopes, this is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, officially established in 1756, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The Douro River winds through it all, connecting remote quintas to the city of Porto, and for generations it has been as much a working route for wine as a source of some of the country's most striking landscapes.

It is only fitting, then, that the best way to experience this river is aboard a classic wooden boat, gliding past vineyards that have barely changed in appearance for centuries. That tradition now has a new addition.

There is a new presence on the Douro River, and it carries decades of history beneath its restored hull. Her name is Alma, and she has just joined Pipadouro's fleet as its newest classic yacht, ready to welcome guests along one of the most scenic wine routes in the world.

A Restoration Years in the Making

Alma's journey to the Douro was not an overnight arrival. For several years, Piouro dedicated itself to recovering this classic vessel with a clear goal: preserving her original identity while bringing her up to the standards of comfort, elegance, and attention to detail that define the Pipadouro experience today.

Getting to Know Alma

Built in 1964, Alma measures 17 meters in length and can carry up to 14 passengers. She was designed to offer private experiences of excellence, combining generous interior and exterior spaces with comfort, privacy, and the authenticity that runs through every vessel in the Pipadouro fleet.

A few details that make Alma stand out:

  • A classic vessel from 1964, restored with respect for her original character;
  • 17 meters in length, with capacity for up to 14 passengers;
  • Spacious interior and exterior areas designed for private groups;
  • Built for exclusive experiences, whether for individual travelers or small groups.

Where Alma Sails

Alma is currently in operation on the Douro, where she has already welcomed her first guests, and she is also prepared to host tailor-made programs in Porto upon request.  Aboard Alma, guests can enjoy the same programs available on the Friendship I, which means Pipadouro can now operate along the entire navigable stretch of the river, from Barca d'Alva all the way to the mouth of the Douro in Porto.

Each experience is shaped around the profile and expectations of the guests on board, whether that means a quiet afternoon among the vineyards or a full-day journey through the valley.

Experiences Aboard Alma

Alma's programs range from short river cruises to full-day journeys through the Douro Valley, each designed around a different way of experiencing the river. A few of the most memorable:

  • Vintage Breakfast: A morning cruise from Pinhão, with breakfast served on the aft deck as the boat glides along the river.
  • Wine with a View: A two-hour cruise built around a guided tasting of Douro wines, from crisp whites to Port.
    Charming Dinner: An evening cruise that ends in a candlelit dinner served on board, right on the water.
  • Vintage Bed & Breakfast: The chance to spend a night aboard Alma itself, in a suite with the comforts of a boutique hotel, followed by breakfast on deck the next morning.
  • One Day in Douro Valley: A full-day program combining a cruise with a guided tour and lunch at one of the region's historic quintas.
  • Two Terroirs, One Essence: A longer journey pairing visits to two different Douro estates in a single day, each with its own guided tour and tasting.
  • Vintage Wild Travel: The most ambitious of Alma's routes, following the river upstream toward Barca d'Alva, past the historic Cachão da Valeira and through the Valeira and Pocinho locks, into the wilder, less-visited stretch of the Upper Douro.

Alma is a reminder of what makes a journey along the Douro so special: the river, the terraced vineyards, and a slower way of traveling that only a classic boat can offer.
