Porto has been named the friendliest city in Europe in the 2026 Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards. Worldwide, only Melbourne in Australia ranks higher. Seoul, in South Korea, completes the podium, and [Lisbon](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wine-tours/all/5-day-lisbon-premium-tour) follows closely in fourth place. For travelers planning a trip to northern Portugal, it is a welcome confirmation of something visitors have been saying for years.

### How did Porto rank?

Melbourne took first place with 98.52, and Seoul came third with 97.94. ## The 2026 ranking of the friendliest cities in the world

The list comes from the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards, which gather ratings from the magazine's readers. Each city receives a score out of 100. That means the result reflects the experiences of travelers who visited, not a measurement of how locals describe their own city.

| Position | City | Country | Score |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Melbourne | Australia | 98.52 |
| 2 | Porto | Portugal | 98.33 |
| 3 | Seoul | South Korea | 97.94 |
| 4 | Lisbon | Portugal | 97.50 |
| 5 | Amsterdam | Netherlands | 97.35 |
| 6 | Perth | Australia | 97.28 |
| 7 | Jaipur | India | 96.67 |
| 8 | Buenos Aires | Argentina | 96.37 |
| 9 | Bangkok | Thailand | 96.16 |
| 10 | Cape Town | South Africa | 96.00 |

The gap between Melbourne and Porto is only 0.19 points, and [Portugal](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wine-tours/all/14-day-premium-tour-in-portugal)holds two of the top four places.

### Why Porto feels so welcoming

A ranking cannot explain a feeling, but travelers tend to mention the same things.

- Scale: Porto is compact enough to explore on foot, which makes everyday interactions with shopkeepers, waiters, and neighbors part of the experience.
- Food and wine culture: meals are unhurried, and hosts are generally happy to explain a dish or recommend a glass.
- Port wine heritage: the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro River from the historic center, offer visitors an easy, immersive way to learn about the city's best-known product.
- Pride in the city: locals take visible pleasure in sharing their city, from the Ribeira waterfront to the neighborhood taverns.

Condé Nast Traveller links the result to the city's rising popularity among [food and culture lovers](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wine-tours/all/7-day-premium-tour-in-porto-and-douro), and to a hospitality that brings many visitors back for repeat trips.

### Lisbon also makes the top four

[Lisbon](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wine-tours/all/5-day-lisbon-premium-tour)rose from eighth place last year to fourth in 2026, with a score of 97.50. The appeal is easy to understand. The capital climbs a series of hills above the Tagus River, and its historic trams, tiled facades and fado music are among the things visitors remember most.

### Tips for making the most of a friendly city

1. **Stay at least two nights in Porto.** The city rewards slow exploration, and the welcome is easiest to feel when you are not rushing.
2. **Pair the city with the Douro Valley.** Two or three days upriver let you meet the producers behind the wines you taste in Porto.
3. **Choose small, hosted experiences.** Private tastings and family-run quintas are where hospitality stands out most.
4. **Visit in shoulder season.** Spring and early autumn bring pleasant weather and a more relaxed atmosphere. Autumn is also harvest season in the Douro.
