Portugal was considered for the first time the friendliest country in the world, appearing in 1st place in a list of 65 countries. All the countries are friendly to immigrants, according to a study by the Inter Nations, published in the American magazine Forbes. The country climbed nine places compared to 2016.

The study by InterNations, the largest global information network for expatriates, analyzed nearly 13,000 surveys from people in 188 countries. The parameters analyzed were the attitude towards immigrants, the ease of making friends, and the probability of expatriates staying in the country.

Moving up nine places since the last study, carried out in 2016, Portugal received excellent reviews from ex-pats who passed through. Analyzing the parameters of the study, 94% of ex-pats like the attitude of the Portuguese, 58% say that it is easy to make friends in Portugal and almost half of the people who pass through our country (47%) would like to stay.

A highlight for the fact that there are only three European countries in the top 20. Besides Portugal, Spain (17th) and Romania (19th) are the other nations. Kuwait was considered the least friendly country. 46% of expatriates, three times more than the global average (16%), say that the attitude of the population is not the best.

Around 36% of the people surveyed said they immediately felt “at home” in Portugal, a figure that corresponds to almost double the global average. Of these people, about 47% responded that they contemplated the possibility of staying in the country indefinitely. A significant number of respondents stated that most of the friends they have in Portugal are residents.

When it comes to happiness, Scandinavian countries lead the way: Finland leads the list for the fifth time in a row, according to the 2022 World Happiness Report (WHP). Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands occupy the following positions. The report measures average life expectancy, GDP per capita, social support, levels of corruption, social trust, generosity, and freedom to rank. Portugal ranks 56th on the WHP, and Afghanistan is considered the most unhappy country in the world.
