Set on the Atlantic slope of Serra de Grândola and only ten kilometres away from the sea, Serenada Enoturismo is a small housing unit where comfort and sophistication live together with tradition and rusticity.
It belongs to the same family since the 17th century, according to a will dated of 1686. The estate offers an amazing panoramic view of the Arrábida mountains, huge pine woods and cork oak forests extending to the horizon.
Wine Tourism in Portugal has interviewed Jacinta Sobral, the owner of Serenada Enoturismo, in order to learn more about this wine producing estate in one of the best (and off the beaten path) wine regions in Portugal: Península de Setúbal.
Serenada extends throughout 23 ha. (56 ac.), a land dedicated to the viticulture since 1961, the year when the first vineyard was planted. The old vines, planted by the father of Jacinta Sobral, led to a passion for the wine, and now the third generation is now taking their first steps.
The wines Serras de Grândola, which are produced in the house cellar with the cooperation of the whole family, stand out for by their freshness, minerality, complexity and elegance. Guests and visitors can enjoy the tasting of the wines Serras de Grândola and Serras de Grândola Cepas Cinquentenárias (Fiftieth Grapevines).
Surrounded by olive trees, a wide area of cork oaks and the largest extension of pine trees in the country, the vineyards are located on the moorland of the rivers Tejo and Sado. At an average altitude of 150 m, they are strongly influenced by the Atlantic breeze, which provides the necessary night freshness for a proper maturation. The great minerality of the soil, with a predominance of iron and shale, complement this particular location.
Jacinta shared with us that the first vine was planted in 1961 by her father. Jacinta then followed her father's footsteps, planting a new vine in 2008. Jacinta started the present project in 2013, with a great emphasis in wine tourism, with the creation of wine workshops and tastings, and creating an accommodation unit, nowadays with six rooms, allowing her to share with Serenada's visitors the unique setting of Serenada, on the top of Serra de Grândola, with a great view over Arrábida.
For Jacinta, one of the main characteristics that differentiate Serenada from other wine tourism projects is this fabulous location, with a far-reaching view to the vineyards, extending to Serra da Arrábida. But also the boutique ambiance that was created in Serenada and that is felt in the wine production and in the welcoming of its guests, the proximity with every visitor, never neglecting every guest's privacy and peacefulness. Last but not least, other differentiating characteristic of this estates is the quality of its wines Serras de Grândola and Cepas Cinquentenárias.
When asked what the perfect experience looks like at Serenada Enoturismo, Jacinta suggests that one enjoys slowing and without rushing all that Serenada has to offer, from a wine tasting in a guided tour through the vineyards, to a complete stay in one of the suites featuring a panoramic balcony, to a wine dinner enjoying the tranquility and the beauty of this place and the proximity to some of the best beaches in the Alentejo coast, with Aberta Nova Beach only a few minutes away.
The contact and gathering either with the owners or with the small team, are part of the experience.
The visitors' curiosity is mostly about the history of the wines and the family, since they are in an estate that was kept in the same family for more than 300 years. The wine producing process itself is also one of the main questions of the visitors.
The guests come from all over the world but mainly from Germany, France, Switzerland, Spanish and Portuguese.
Serenada only has 6 rooms, two of them are suites with private balcony overlooking the surrounding landscape, making it the ideal place for relaxing and enjoy a peaceful retreat from the daily routine. The stay includes breakfast, which can be served in a picnic basket so our guests can decide where they want to stop and hunker down.
Jacinta Sobral says that most guests visit Serenada for a complete stay with dinner, since that allows the visitors to fully enjoy the experience at Serenada.
Serenada Enoturismo is truly a peaceful and relaxing place, where you can have the best of both worlds: contact with the surrounding nature and landscape, while at the same time enjoying a comfortable luxury stay in a charming boutique hotel.
