Portugal has once again clinched multiple prestigious accolades at the esteemed World Travel Awards, solidifying its position as a global tourism powerhouse. Following its recognition as the best European destination with 17 awards in September, Portugal continued its winning streak on the world stage during the recent ceremony in Dubai.
Out of the 293 awards presented at the event, Portugal claimed an impressive total of 11 accolades. Notably, Madeira secured its status as the best island destination in the world for the ninth time, affirming its enduring appeal. Repeat victors included the Passadiços do Paiva, the Dark Sky Alqueva project, and Parques de Sintra, recognized as the best adventure tourism attraction, responsible tourism entity, and conservation company, respectively.
The Azores garnered global acclaim by being crowned the world's best adventure tourism destination. At the same time, the city of Braga emerged as the world's best-emerging destination—a delightful surprise for Portugal in the 30th edition of the World Travel Awards.
National carrier TAP also soared to success, securing two prestigious titles: best-leading airline in the world to Africa and South America. Portugal's hospitality industry also shone, with several distinguished hotels making their mark. The Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel in Lisbon was hailed as the best classic hotel, Dunas Douradas Beach Club in Almancil stood out as the top golf resort and villas, and the Bairro Alto Hotel in Lisbon was recognized as a historic landmark hotel.
While Portugal celebrated its victories, the global travel community witnessed the Maldives being crowned the best destination this year, with the Philippines earning the title of the best beach destination.
