# Unveiling Quinta da Fonte Souto: Symington's estate in the Alentejo

Quinta da Fonte Souto. This [Quinta](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wineries-vineyards/quinta-da-fonte-souto), whose name is synonymous with everything we find on the property, is love at first sight. Fonte Souto, the new name given by the current owners, symbolizes the abundance of water, fed by the springs inside the quinta, and '[Souto](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wineries-vineyards/quinta-da-fonte-souto)' represent the considerable area covered by chestnut trees.

## Quinta da Fonte Souto is a new wine project from the Symington family in the fascinating sub-region of Portalegre in the Alto Alentejo. 

[Quinta da Fonte Souto](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wineries-vineyards/quinta-da-fonte-souto) is located in the sub-region of Portalegre, in the Alto Alentejo, in the south of [Portugal](https://www.winetourismportugal.com/en/wineries-vineyards/quinta-da-fonte-souto). Close to the Serra de São Mamede (1,025 meters), the property benefits from the altitude, with a cooler microclimate that contrasts with the typically hot and dry conditions of the Alentejo region. Production is low due to the schist and granite soils, which are less fertile than those found in the flat, undulating terrain that characterizes most of the Alentejo.

The estate covers 207 hectares, 43 of which are planted with vines. The main grape varieties are Aragonês, Alfrocheiro, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The property has an important chestnut tree, which is where its name comes from - “souto” refers to an area wooded with chestnut trees (as previously explained). In addition, the property has a large forested area of 100 hectares, a third of which is covered in cork oaks, very characteristic of the Alentejo landscape.

The first harvest under our management was in 2017. The grapes were vinified on site, in the estate's well-equipped cellar. The debut harvest couldn't have been more auspicious.
